I picked up a friend last night and decided to go out and have dinner. I told him where do you want to go and he said you’re the expert! :P So I told him how about we go to some new restaurants that I haven’t been to here in Kuwait and I named him a few until I mentioned “burger” place so he jumped out and said let’s go! So we went to the newly opened burger joint “Zee Brgr”. It’s the new concept from the makers of Maki.

The interior is a bit weird and a bit underwhelming coming from the people of Maki but I ignored that since we’re coming to judge the food instead of the interior. We received an iPad as a menu filled with pictures. Some of the items were from Maki and most of the things are made for Zee brgr. The concept was a bit hazy and unclear based on the deco and the food menu. We ordered most of the things on the menu and they are as follows:-

(Carpaccio Bruchetta)

Homemade carpaccio on special focaccia bread topped with cherry tomato, rocket marinated with special balsamic mixture and topped with Parmesan cheese. I liked the idea of having carpaccio as a bruchetta and the mixture of everything worked very well but I wonder if the carpaccio was aged because it was a bit dark. Overall, it was good!

(Burrata)

Homemade Burrata filled with Mozzarella cheese served on a bed of Italian basil and tomato and served with special mixture of balsamic vinegar and basil sauce. Two very nicely shaped burratas with a needle. Although, we’ve seen the idea of the needle before, I really liked injecting the mixture of the balsamic vinegar and the basil sauce into the Mozzarella. I liked the dish!

(Beef Skewers)

chunks of beef marinated and cooked with special teriyaki mixture sauce. Like some of the dishes, I’m a bit hesitated with this dish because it just feels disjointed since there wasn’t any clear concept and direction for the restaurant. The teriyaki glaze tasted good but the beef was chewy and over cooked a little bit.

(Sweet Potatoes)

Sweet potatoes dusted with roasted saigon cinnamon and brown sugar. I’m a big fan of sweet potatoes and this didn’t disappoint at all! The potatoes had a nice texture and perfect crunch from the outside and soft from the inside and that hint of cinnamon was creme de la creme. I loved it! :)

(French Fries with Truffle)

Seasoned with sea salt truffle oil, Parmesan cheese and topped with roasted fresh herbs and Moroccan truffles. I had a mixed feelings about this for a couple of things. One the “Moroccan Truffles” didn’t make any sense and felt disjointed. You pick a fry and it the truffles fell down. The solution would be either to shave it over the fries, or have a sauce over it to keep it intact or simply just remove it. Other than that, the fries were chunky, crunchy and had a lot of flavors.

(Foie Gras Bites)

Homemade beef patties on a brioche buns with brie cheese, caramelized onions , special sweet pimento and raspberry sauce and topped with Foie Gras brazed with teriyaki mixture. If you don’t know what Foie Gras is, it’s (كبدة الأوز) goose or duck liver and it’s a delicacy mostly used in French cuisine. I like Foie Gras and I loved having it on a burger and this one was no different. Soft buns, tasty beef and very well balanced mixture. I liked it! :)

(Tartufo Brgr)

Homemade beef patty on a focaccia buns topped with hard Parmesan crisps, grilled tomato, fresh basil, Mozzarella cheese and glazed with a mixture of tartufo mushroom. OK before I give my opinion on the burger, I’d like to be honest as always. This is mostly a COPYCAT burger of the famous “Umami Burger” in California. There are some difference between some of the ingredients but I thought it’s not a good thing to copy a famous burger and name and taking credit for it. The real difference is the herby bun, basil and tartufo mushroom instead of shittake. The burger has a lot of earthy flavors which is pretty good! Zee brgr cook their burger medium well as a default but this one unfortunately was overcooked. It’s a shame since, everything tasted very well and had a nice depth of flavors :)

(Essa Brgr)

Homemade beef patty on a potato bun with garlic mayo topped with mozzarella cheese, caramelized onions and mushrooms. I loved this burger! The potato buns were soft and the patty had a lot of juices! And that caramelized onions was spot on :) Loved it!

(Zee Brgr)

Homemade beef patty on a brioche bun bedded on Zee sauce and topped with 3 tempura onion rings, grilled tomato and American cheese. I think this would become a best seller for the restaurant! The great thing about it is not having a hard, over cooked onion rings but they softens when you eat the whole burger and keeps that crunch of the tempura. It’s pretty good and flavorful.

(Honey Peanut Butter Shake) & (Mango Pulp Shake)

They had 4-5 shakes on the menu but we settled on the unique ones. Unfortunately, both were disappointing. Mango pulp with vanilla ice cream was runny and watery and although, the honey peanut butter tasted decent, it didn’t have the texture and thickness of a milk shake. Needs major work!

All Zee burger patties are “thick” which I’m not a fan of, as I’m more of an American thin type. There nothing wrong with the burgers but it’s only personal choice. I just wanted to give you a heads up.

All in all, “Zee Brgr” took off on a good start, as their burgers had “depth of flavors” which saved it from the awkward interior and the confusing concept. It’s good! :)

Maki posseses very poor business ethics. Huge egoes and conduct themselves very poorly. This people did not creat the concept at Zeebrgr, it was a very talented chef who is no longer there because they felt they did not need him anymore and without any notice they put him on the street? Now they take credit for it! How is that for fairness and good business ethics! Talk to me! What do you think?

Maki Group only dignifies comments that have legal basis and are based on factual evidence. If this “mystery” blogger has any legal grounds to make such allegations about Maki Group, he or she is more than welcome to seek proper channels as Kuwait possesses a very functional judicial court system. We believe that is a more appropriate avenue to pursue than taking “cheap shots” at a group of hard-working individuals who brought Maki and other concepts to the region. ZeeBrgr’s chefs and management are working hard as we speak to perfect the concept. It is a collective effort, and not the work of one individual, thus, there is no place for huge egos at Maki group. It is simply a baseless allegation!

    Dear Q80 in Denver,
On behalf of the ZeeBrgr team I wish to thank you for visiting ZeeBrgr in beloved Kuwait, and to inform you that we truly respect and value yours and all of our guests’ opinions.
We appreciate you taking the time to post your review and would like to take this opportunity to clarify a couple of points:
1- As for the “décor” of ZeeBrgr, it is modeled around the latest non-exclusive trends in the contemporary restaurant business in the U.S. Case in point: the famous 5-Napkin Burger in New York, and Burger Bar in Las Vegas. Both concepts center around great contemporary international cuisine, burgers, music, and lively ambience. Both places are not highly illuminated, which makes for dining, lounging, socializing and listening to music a very desirable experience. You may check websites, photos and menus of these culinary leaders:

2- To be perfectly honest, we at ZeeBrgr do not consider “Umami Burger” as a concept that we would want to model our own theme after. Thus, we never looked at their menu until you mentioned them in your review. On the other hand, the Tartufo Burger is our own interpretation of many recipes that you may obtain easily online, but the twist on this recipe is that we used our own secret sauce (the main ingredient to any burger), and our own fresh, home-baked focaccia. You may find recipes with parmesan crisp all over the internet, as the use of parmesan crisp is and never will be exclusive to any restaurant; certainly not ours either.

We again thank you for your patronage and appreciate every minute you spend at ZeeBrgr and at all other establishments, for it is food-lovers such as yourself that keep the culinary world healthy and continuously evolving.

  9. Yousef says:

Oh so this is the restaurant where we’re supposed to finally disagree on! :)

Q8 in Denver, We visited this place like 2 weeks ago and we couldn’t have been more disappointed.

There is no excuse for having the main courses arrive before the starters. And there is no excuse for having the burger’s lower bun be so soaked with the burger’s juices that it looked disgusting and inedible. There is no excuse for having dishes from MAKI, which is a totally different restaurant; in food, concept, and EVERYTHING, to have a guest appearance on their zee brgr menu. I mean seriously! Why would a restaurant with any self respect put another restaurant’s food and logo on their own menu?

And I really hate it when a so called ‘burger joint’ have average-tasting patties. Nothing’s special about their patties.

Oh and you shouldn’t have mentioned Umami burger in this post. I’m offended for Umami :P

    • Q80 In Denver says:

Oooh el 7een be9eer “Tag emtageg” :P Ana shgayelek .. Ent MAGROOD! :P
No seriously based on my and your experience here is the difference:-
1- You have the absolute right to complain about having a main course before an appetizer and you have the right to refuse it and pay for it but that situation didn’t happen to us :P

2- Having soggy buns means its been sitting on the counter for a while before they served it and you should’ve returned it! But then again, that didn’t happen to us :P Check the pics! :P

3- The only thing that I truly agree with you completely is having some dishes from MAKI which didn’t make any sense at all! But I guess they’re trying to leave an impression with people that the restaurant they’re sitting in is belong to Maki but yet again that’s not an excuse.

As for their patties, as you can read in the end of the post that I’m not a fan of big fatty patties plus they’re not shake shack or even Umami (Erte7t :P ) LOL! :P They’re decent but they have to be careful with the cooking temperature .. It’s inconsistent.

  10. Foodie says:

Why would Maki jump on the burger bandwagon? Doesn’t make any sense. From the looks of the place they seem to be lost about what a true burger joint is all about. If they wanted to model it after Umami it’s totally fine, no need to deny the fact. It’s seems some of the ideas are taken locally too.

    • Q80 In Denver says:

Why not? It’s no shame to create another concept from scratch if its good. I agree that they’re interior design is confusing and it doesn’t relate to anything but as I understood from them is that they want to create a fusion kind of burger joint and not the usual kind.

  11. Be Festive says:

Looks amazing! Can’t wait to try and btw ur blog rocks! Thanks a lot
